Early Childhood Education: 2022-2023

Kipp Philadelphia: Octavius Catto Elementary

Sarah Folger founded and led the K–3 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program, designing it from the ground up. She developed the curriculum, ordered all instructional materials, and created an interdisciplinary learning environment that integrated scientific inquiry, artistic practice, engineering design, and cultural exploration.

Students began the year by investigating Earth science through the observation of rocks, minerals, and natural pigments, drawing inspiration from ancient paint-making techniques to create earthy compositions. They then collaborated to design and build an immersive cave installation that showcased their artwork.

Throughout the year, Sarah integrated multicultural art history and social-emotional learning through hands-on projects, including creating a collaborative ofrenda for Día de Muertos, exploring a variety of printmaking techniques, creating an interactive space display, and studying weaving traditions from cultures around the world.

The year concluded with a school-wide STEAM celebration, where students exhibited their artwork, engineering projects, and scientific investigations, celebrating a year of creativity, collaboration, and discovery.
